When PDD was invited to help with the design of the first installation-free water dispenser for an established global brand, we knew that there was an opportunity to do something different.
With modern design aesthetics and a contemporary visual brand language that conveys the advantages of its unique AquaShield ‘all-in-one’ filtration system, we designed an innovative experience that delights users, and is truly unique in the Asian market.
The touchscreen and controls are fully integrated in the body of the product and offer a seamless physical and digital experience for users. A CleanSmart system also tracks how much water has been filtered, and reminds users when it is time to replace it.
The design addresses the issues that usually arise when changing a filter; a process that is often awkward and messy. Using slick interaction design and mechanics, we developed a unique mechanism that works by simply opening the lid, turning and taking the filter out. The water tank was also designed to fit different water sources with different spout heights, a common feature in many households in Asia.
The tower design makes the product more intriguing, with an asymmetric vertical layout that facilitates access to the water tank at the back of the unit. The corner-cut feature is visual reminder that the unit only requires a single filter, compared to traditional models that require multiple ones. Unlike traditional under-the-sink water filters that require time-consuming installation, Philips Water dispenser ADD6910/90 is a countertop appliance with a smaller footprint that suits the needs of contemporary households. It can be positioned anywhere in the house, even far away from a fixed water supply.
The dispenser features a clean-cut, minimal design that incorporates instant heating technology to provide drinks of different sizes and temperatures. Successfully launched in China and Singapore, it has been conceived to meet the needs of stylish, health-focused, affluent Asian consumers.
The Philips Water Dispenser was awared a Merit at DFA Design for Asia Awards 2020, which recognise designs that embody Asian aesthetics and culture, and influence design trends in the region.
